Episode 2 :: Question 5 on Fasting

Question 5 – Neo Daniel Diphaha (South Africa): Hi, Pastor Chris, I would like to know the rules of fasting. When am I supposed to fast and how do I determine the duration of my fast? How does fasting help me in my prayers?

Answer: Well, uh [laughs], the rules of fasting…there are no specific rules of fasting as it were, because there are different kinds of fasting like the Bible shows us. There are different types of fasting. And, you can be led by the Spirit to fast, and when he tells you to fast, then you have to fast; and, he will tell you how long you should fast. But, apart from that, fasting in itself helps us to get our spirits attuned to God. Fasting helps us position ourselves spiritually to hear God – to listen to Him. See, fasting doesn’t get God to listen to us; it gets us to listen to God [see?]. It’s a spiritual exercise also; it’s another…it’s a form of self-denial, where you’re able to subdue your flesh, subdue your appetites, and then you can listen to voice of the Spirit of God within you. So, that’s why fasting is important. You said “how does it help you in prayer?” That’s the way it helps you in prayer. It helps your focus; it strengthens your resolve, when you pray and fast. So, that’s why it’s important that we fast.

And, then, you said, “when am I supposed to fast and how do I determine the duration?” I just told you. The Spirit of God can lead you…He can lead you as to how to fast. Apart from that, you may belong in a group, like in a church, when we all say we’re all going to fast at a certain period, you’ve got to join; that means the Spirit of God is guiding all of us at that time to fast, and you also fast. So, you can fast as a spiritual exercise of as self-denial. You can fast as an act of faith on your part, and say you’re determining at this time [that] you just want to stay off food and pray. So, this really has to do with you; and, then the duration also depends on you; the witness will be within your spirit. [If] this is a personal fast, the witness will be within your spirit. Apart from that, when we have a corporate fast in a group, in a cell, in a fellowship, or in a church, we fast according to the duration that has been stipulated by the leaders, because that’s also one of the ways that the Holy Spirit leads us.
