Question 5 – Elvis (Cameroon): Dear Pastor Chris, I followed one of your messages on LCN TV and there you said God is not angry with us when we sin, but I have been studying the Old Testament and in the book of Judges; I can’t count the number of times the bible says “And the anger of the Lord was hot against the people.” Is it something of the Old Testament only? Thanks, and God bless you.
Answer 5: Well, yeah, I said that God’s not angry with us when we sin. That’s true; He’s not, because there’s provision for your sin. In 1 John chapter 2 when you read from verse one, it says that “I write this to you that you sin not”. It says. “My little children, these things I write unto you, that ye sin not. And if any man sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous: And he is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.” [1 John 2:1-2] He is the propitiation; that means the appeasement for our sins. So, there is a provision for the appeasement of the Father’s heart when we sin. So, He’s not angry with us, but He does get angry with you - you incur His anger or His wrath - when you reject that provision. So, that’s where you get trouble, because there’s no sin that cannot be covered by the blood of Jesus - washed away, blotted out by the blood of Jesus. There’s no sin without remedy. That’s the point. See, every sin is washed by the blood of Jesus and if you reject what He has provided for the propitiation for your sins, then you incur the wrath of God, because you don’t have options. But when you sin, He doesn’t get angry with it or angry with you, because He knows you can get over it as a Christian—and you should!
Let me read to you from Ephesians chapter 5 just to help you understand this even better. Ephesians chapter 5 [from verse 2], “And walk in love, as Christ also hath loved us, and hath given himself for us an offering and a sacrifice to God for a sweetsmelling savour. But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let it not be once named among you, as becometh saints; Neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor jesting, which are not convenient: but rather giving of thanks. For this ye know, that no whoremonger, nor unclean person, nor covetous man, who is an idolater, hath any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God. Let no man deceive you with vain words: for because of these things cometh the wrath of God upon the children of disobedience. [I want you to notice] Be not ye therefore partakers with them. For ye were sometimes darkness [you used to be darkness], but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light.” [Ephesians 5: 2 - 8] I want you to observe how He distinguished between us and the children of disobedience. He tells us that because of these sins that He listed, the wrath of God comes upon the children of disobedience, because the children of disobedience are those who have not yet obeyed the gospel. The bible say, “…what shall the end be for them that obey not the gospel of Christ?” [1 Peter 4: 17] See, they have not obeyed the gospel. To obey the gospel means to accept the good news of Christ’s salvation, and because they haven’t accepted it, they are called ‘children of disobedience’. Now, we are called ‘children of obedience’, not because we have obeyed in all things - in every step of the way - and have done right, but because we have obeyed the gospel - the call of the gospel to salvation. We have obeyed it, so He calls us ‘children of obedience’ or ‘obedient children’. Now, let me read that to you from 1 Peter chapter 1 and verse 14, “As obedient children, not fashioning yourselves according to the former lusts in your ignorance.” [1 Peter 1:14] See that? He calls us ‘obedient children’ and He expects us to behave that way. So, back here it [referring again to Ephesians 5: 7] says, “Be not ye therefore partakers with them." The wrath of God comes on them. So, you’ve got to live your life in the light of God’s word. So, as a Christian, if you do something wrong, God’s not mad at you; He’s not angry with you. What He expects you to do is take advantage of His provision for the forgiveness of your sins. You incur His anger [His wrath] if you reject that provision.
